Access Models

There are several acquisition models for ebook content on ScienceDirect. Content is organized by calendar year (e.g. there is the 2017 front list, the 2016 front list, and so forth). In the case of perpetual access, platform fees apply.

Subscription access only
College Edition

Includes the subscribed-to year's front list, plus a static backfile back to 1995. Please see the College Edition resource page for information. Upon cancellation, all access ceases.

Manual Reference Works (Encyclopedias)

Encyclopedias are available for subscription access only on a title-by-title basis, unlike other ebooks which are only available for perpetual access only.

Subscription access with selective perpetual access
  • The Freedom Collection includes all ebook titles from the relevant years (see note below for details about which years).
  • The Insights libraries are subject collections (and there is no content overlap between subject collections).

These collections provide access to the subscribed-to year's front list, plus a backlist that includes all previous subscribed-to front lists as well as a four-year backfile that begins with the first subscribed year. (For example, if you start your subscription in 2010, you gain access to content from 2005 onward, and with each renewed year you add to that content.)

When a subscriber chooses not to renew their subscription, they can select a limited number of titles from their accessed content for perpetual access. The amount of titles they can select is based on the subscription fees they have paid over the course of their subscription. (For example, if from 2010 to 2016 you spent $x, then upon cancellation you can choose titles for perpetual access that add up to $x.)

Perpetual access purchases

Content can be purchased on a title-by-title basis or in subject collections organized by year. There is no content overlap between subject collections. (For example, you can buy the 2016 Specialty Medicine collection, or the 2016 Specialty Medicine collection, and so forth. Prior to 2007, collections are organized in year bunches that depend on the collection e.g. you can buy the Clinical Medicine pre-2007 collection, or the Veterinary Science and Veterinary Medicine 1995 - 2006 collection, etc.)

Evidence-based model

The evidence-based model allows a subscriber to trial a collection of content for a year, and to select a limited amount of that content for purchase at the end of the year (e.g. based on usage stats). A firm commitment to purchase a specific $x must be made at the beginning of the trial period.
